MUSICOLOGY DEPARTMENT

Department Overview

The Musicology Department consists of the following subfields:

  • Music Theory
  • General Musicology
  • Ethnomusicology

The program aims to:

  • Train experts, researchers, and academicians in these three fields.
  • Encourage the sharing of high-quality music productions.
  • Promote national musicological approaches on an international level.

Programs supporting musicology education have been designed based on students' interests and talents. Students can select elective courses related to their field, as well as courses from other disciplines based on their preferences.

Graduates of the program can pursue careers as:

  • Academicians in music theory, solfège, composition, musicology, and ethnomusicology in professional music education institutions.
  • Scientists and researchers.
  • Consultants in TRT (Turkish Radio and Television Corporation) and the Ministry of Culture ensembles and institutions.
  • Teachers, provided they obtain a teaching certification.

The qualifications of the programs offered within the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts follow the Turkish Higher Education Qualifications Framework (TYYÇ). The curriculum is designed based on the objectives and learning outcomes of the programs, ensuring compliance with Bologna ECTS requirements.

Program designs are developed collaboratively by incorporating feedback from internal and external stakeholders. The Faculty of Music and Performing Arts has a defined process for program design and approval. The objectives and learning outcomes of the programs have been formulated, aligned with TYYÇ, and publicly announced.

Each program’s content and course descriptions are developed based on:

  • National core curriculum (if applicable).
  • Accreditation standards (if available).
  • The mission and vision of the institution.

A structured monitoring system ensures that the intended learning outcomes are being met. The faculty has defined the principles and rules for organizing learning processes at the department level. The curriculum includes a competency matrix, which outlines the methods through which students acquire competencies (e.g., competency-course-teaching method matrix).

Program design also considers the physical and technological requirements for effective education.
