Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Anthem
On the 100th anniversary of the Republic, Prof. Uğur Türkmen, a composer and educator, proposed that Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University should have its own anthem.
Prof. Türkmen shared his idea with poet Esat Anık, with whom he had previously collaborated on several compositions.
One night, he received a message from the poet that seemed to perfectly capture their shared emotions:
“I have just finished, dear professor. I tried several drafts but discarded them. Now, I am finally satisfied. I hope you like it. The technique follows a 7-syllable meter with a refrain structure.”
In Çanakkale’s heart,
March 18 thrives,
Our university
Carries us forward to the future.
A leading school in knowledge,
A pioneer in science,
The forefront of the nation,
It always surpasses itself.
A path of progress,
Filled with achievements,
A school of Türkiye,
Excelling in education.
In the battle against ignorance,
In friendship and peace,
In scientific enlightenment,
It carries the world forward.
The first in our hearts,
The jewel of our nation,
With thousands of students,
It runs toward tomorrow.
In the land of victory,
Under the shadow of the crescent and star,
In Çanakkale’s heart,
March 18 thrives.

Prof. Türkmen quickly composed the anthem and first shared it with the students and faculty of the State Conservatory (now the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts). The composition, arranged with piano accompaniment, was well received by both students and educators.
The orchestration of the anthem was arranged by Assoc. Prof. Bahadır Çokamay.
The anthem was performed for the first time by the Conservatory Orchestra and the Music Education Department Choir of the Faculty of Education during the 2023-2024 academic year opening ceremony of the university.
On July 6, 2023, the anthem was officially approved by the university senate (Decision No: 08/1-19) with the following statement:
"The Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Anthem, composed by Prof. Dr. Uğur Türkmen, Director of the State Conservatory, along with its lyrics and sheet music, was presented for approval through the Conservatory Directorate’s letter dated 14/06/2023 (No: 2300126509). The proposal was unanimously approved as submitted."
